Law Enforcement MDT Distractions
ScreenSafe is the only distracted driving solution that allows a fleet manager to choose the speed at which a laptop screen is disabled and/or the speed at which the keyboard is disabled. ScreenSafe does not interfere with any applications running in background on the MDC while the keyboard or monitor is disabled. Law enforcement agencies can now ensure distracted driving safety policies are being implemented by officers in the field. If necessary the officer can choose to override all restrictions and regain control of the MDC at any speed; a log of such overrides is recorded.
Automobile Accidents are the number one cause of death of law enforcement officers.
Laptop computers are an important tool for today’s law enforcement officer but they can be a liability if the officer is distracted while driving. Use of a laptop in a moving vehicle increases the probability of accidents, injury to the officer and citizen, and litigation. ScreenSafeis the ONLY Software that has been designed for the Law Enforcement MDCs. Officers can continue to utilize their laptops while reducing driving distractions.
ScreenSafe disables the monitor upon vehicle movement and eliminates “Driver Distraction”. The ScreenSafe application is customizable allowing complete control over when to disable the Laptop. ScreenSafe reports are uploaded to a web based management portal.
For a fraction of the cost of settling a single Officer caused Distracted Driving Accident you could equip your entire fleet with ScreenSafe. For only pennies a day you could remove the “Attractive Nuisance” created by a visible laptop in a Police Vehicle. ScreenSafe is Designed to allow access to the Laptop when needed while reducing driving distractions.
A vehicle traveling at 60 MPH is moving at 88 feet per second. Glancing for 3 seconds at a laptop screen will allow the vehicle to travel 264 feet without the driver looking at the road. This is a distance of over 17 car lengths. The risk and liability of a government agency allowing their officers to operate under distracting conditions increases the likelihood of an accident and a liability claim. Distracted Driver Liability judgments were, on average, 3.5 times the actual cost of the damage incurred.
The NHTSA has stated that 80% of all accidents are caused by distracted drivers. This resulted in over 2 million injuries last year with over $180 million in damages. As of December 2012, thirty-four states restrict the use of a monitor or display in a moving vehicle. ScreenSafe is cheap insurance to allow you to insure your agency is proactive in protecting the officers and public against distracted driving accidents.

View Detailed Comparison of the Features available with the Global Manager as opposed to the Basic version. Global Manager’s online, Web Based Reports and Alerts include:
Installed Licenses
This is the time the vehicle first began moving that day. This feature is great for verifying employee “start-work” time.
Inactive Vehicles
This is a list of vehicles that ScreenSafe has determined either are not being driven or are being driven without a GPS device installed. If the Fleet manager knows employee “Bob” is operating a vehicle with a laptop installed and the ScreenSafe report shows the vehicle has never reported movement, the Fleet manager can deduce that employee “Bob” did not connect the GPS and needs to be reminded to comply with company guidelines.
Maximum Speed Violation
This provides not only a detailed list of which vehicles exceed the company defined Maximum Speed Limit but also provides a map showing where the violation took place as well as how long the vehicle traveled at the excessive speed limit.
GPS Disconnected Violation
The GPS Disconnected Violation records any attempt by the driver to disconnect the GPS while the vehicle is moving and the laptop screen is disabled. If the Fleet Manager desires he may choose to automatically DISABLE the laptop until the driver reconnects the GPS Antenna.
Worm Hole Violation
A Worm Hole Violation occurs if a driver operates a vehicle without the Laptop GPS connected. When the GPS the is finally connected to the Laptop to avoid appearing on the “inactive report” a “Worm Hole Violation” is recorded.
Detailed Vehicle Trip Report
This is the time the vehicle stopped moving at the end of the day. This feature is great for verifying employee “end work” time as well as all daily activity.
Policy Alert Violations (based upon configuration settings) include:
- Maximum Speed Exceeded
- Attempting to disconnect the GPS while the Vehicle is in motion
- Driving the vehicle without the GPS Installed (Worm Hole)
- Attempting to leave the defined “Geo-Fencing” Area
ScreenSafe Customization Features
ScreenSafe was designed with an easy to use installation and configuration wizard that will allow the Fleet Manager to configure and activate ScreenSafe is less than 10 minutes. ScreenSafe also has the capability for a Fleet Manager to access the online ScreenSafe Configuration Portal and configure a “Master” configuration template that could be automatically downloaded and applied to all vehicles in the fleet.
Once a “Master Configuration” is created, the individual vehicle drivers will not have the opportunity to alter or make changes to the “Master Configuration” created by the Fleet Manger. This ensures all vehicles comply with the company policy for safety related to distracted driving. The Master Configuration is automatically downloaded and installed in each ScreenSafe enabled laptop. The Fleet Manager can even view an online report and verify the date and time the configuration was applied on the remote laptop computer.
Corona Technical Services is the Authorized Distributor of ScreenSafe and can assist you in assessing your needs as well as providing you with a Free Trial Evaluation of ScreenSafe. This product is so easy to install, configure and use that we are convinced that once you install the Free Trial you will Agree that your company needs ScreenSafe to be confident they are not only are complying with all Distracted Driving Laws but protecting the company and the drivers against an unnecessary accident and potential law suit. Now with ScreenSafe the Fleet Manager can quickly and easily ensure compliance with distracted driving laws.
Screen Safe’s Global Manager will allow the Fleet Manager to create custom groups of vehicles with unique configuration settings. If needed, the Fleet Manger can even specify configurations that only apply to specific cars. For example, a city fleet manager could maintain one configuration file that applies to public works vehicles, another for city manager’s vehicles, and yet another for all emergency vehicles. The Fleet Manager could even create a “special Configuration Group” for drivers on probations who have problems with speeding while at work. ScreenSafe is the most powerful, most customizable Distracted Driving Protection Application available.
Some of the more popular Configuration Settings a Fleet Manager can select include:
Enable / Disable Speed
Some Fleet Managers may want the laptop to immediately disable the screen as soon as the vehicle begins moving, other Fleet Managers (example: city power line inspectors) may want the computer operational at speeds of less than 10 mph but for the screen to be disabled at any speed above 10 mph. Because of its flexibility and customization, ScreenSafe could be used on laptops of Police and Emergency vehicles. ScreenSafe would not affect computer function at normal speeds, but would remove screen distractions while in “Hot Pursuit” situations where vehicle speeds may exceed 90 mph.
Quick Peak
This option can be enabled or disabled. The Quick Peek function allows the driver to hit the “space bar” and allow temporary viewing of the monitor for a limited number of seconds as defined in the configuration settings. This allows the driver to have a “Quick Peek” at a mapping application or destination address.
GPS Unplugged
One concern many Fleet Managers have is that a driver might try to defeat the application by unplugging the GPS. If this happens ScreenSafe will log an Alert and notify the Fleet Manager. The Fleet Manager can also configure the action ScreenSafe takes should a Driver Unplug the GPS. You can either re-enable the laptop for simply LOCK the laptop from use until the GPS is reattached. The ScreenSafe application will also play a warning message (“GPS Removed”) if the driver unplugs the GPS. If desired, the Fleet Manage has the ability to TOTALLY DISABLE any laptop the moment a driver attempts to disconnect the GPS antenna; the laptop will become operational again once the GPS antenna is reattached.
Police Notification Page
If a vehicle is stopped by an officer of the Law Enforcement he can simply show the officer the “Police Page” which verifies that the computer was disabled while the vehicle has been in motion. ScreenSafe constantly records the status of the screen and is able to provide this information in an easy to read format that clearly explains how ScreenSafe was able to lock the monitor.
Speed Limit Exceeded
Alerts can be set to notify Fleet Manager when vehicle speeds exceed limits set in the configuration file. Simply set the Max Speed Limit for a speed (say 70 MPH) and Screen Safe will alert both the Driver (verbal warning) and the Fleet Manager (email alert) if the vehicle is traveling at a speed over the limit set.
Worm Hole Alerting
A Fleet Manager needs to overview compliance with the Use of the ScreenSafe application. The Fleet Manager can view not only active vehicles but inactive vehicles. In the case a vehicle travels xx miles without connecting the GPS antenna; the ScreenSafe application will trigger a “Worm Hole Alert. A Worm Hole is a situation by which a vehicle was last detected at one location and without recording any vehicle movement appears at another, distant location….. worm hole.
Custom Geo-Fencing Area
A Fleet Manager can create a “Custom Boundary Area” that all vehicles must remain inside. You simply locate a point on a may say the middle of your city and define the six of the circle around your city. To overview compliance with the Use of the ScreenSafe application. The Fleet Manager can view not only active vehicles but inactive vehicles. In the case a vehicle travels xx miles without connecting the GPS antenna; the ScreenSafe application will trigger a “Worm Hole Alert. A Worm Hole is a situation by which a vehicle was last detected at one location and without recording any vehicle movement appears at another, distant location….. worm hole.
As you can see ScreenSafe was designed to allow each company to customize the application to not only conform with State Distracted Driving Laws, but to also meet their corporate policy for safe driving. With ScreenSafe the Fleet Manager is able to create a custom configuration that meets his company’s vehicle driving guidelines
